Ralph Lauren Polo Size Guide for Men: How to Get the Right Fit Every Time

If you have ever ordered a Ralph Lauren polo online and been surprised when it arrived, you are not alone. I hear this from customers almost every week. The sizing is inconsistent across eras, across product lines and sometimes even within the same collection. A size Large from 1992 fits nothing like a size Large from 2015. And vintage pieces bought without a tape measure can end up gathering dust in the wardrobe instead of being worn. So I wanted to write a proper, practical guide to Ralph Lauren polo sizing for men, based on years of handling these shirts and genuinely caring about people getting it right.

Why Ralph Lauren Sizing Is More Complicated Than You Think

Ralph Lauren is not one brand. It is a family of labels, each with its own sizing conventions, fit philosophy and target customer. Polo Ralph Lauren is the main line most people know. But there is also Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Polo Sport, RRL, Chaps by Ralph Lauren and various diffusion lines. Even within Polo Ralph Lauren, the fit has changed significantly over the decades.

Vintage pieces from the 1980s and early 1990s tend to run noticeably smaller and shorter. A medium from that era often fits like a modern small. The shirts were cut for a slimmer, more fitted silhouette. Then through the late 1990s and 2000s, cuts got boxier and more relaxed. More recently, Ralph Lauren has returned to a slightly more tailored shape, though still with that classic American ease.

The bottom line is this: always check the actual measurements, not just the label size. I cannot say this enough.

The Main Ralph Lauren Polo Fits Explained

Before we get into numbers, it helps to understand the different fit names Ralph Lauren uses, because they affect sizing significantly.

Custom Slim Fit

This is the most fitted option in the current Polo Ralph Lauren range. It sits close to the chest and has a shorter body length. If you are between sizes, you will likely need to go up. It is a modern, tailored look. On a vintage piece you will not see this label, but some older shirts have a similarly close cut.

Slim Fit

Slightly more relaxed than Custom Slim but still a contemporary, tailored shape. Sits well on leaner builds. Not a great choice if you carry more weight around the midsection.

Classic Fit

This is the traditional Ralph Lauren polo cut. Generous through the chest, a bit of room in the torso, a comfortable length. Most vintage polos you will find fall roughly into this category. It is the one I personally love most. It works on almost everyone and it has that authentic old school Ralph Lauren look.

Custom Fit

Sometimes seen on older labels. Sits between Classic and Slim. A nice middle ground.

Ralph Lauren Polo Size Chart for Men

These are approximate measurements. As I said, vintage pieces vary, so always treat these as a starting point and measure the actual garment whenever possible.

  • XS: Chest 34 to 36 inches (86 to 91 cm). Rarely seen in vintage. More common from 2010 onwards.
  • S: Chest 36 to 38 inches (91 to 96 cm). In vintage pieces from the 80s and 90s, a labelled Medium often measures here.
  • M: Chest 38 to 40 inches (96 to 101 cm). The most common vintage size. A labelled Large from an older piece often lands here.
  • L: Chest 40 to 42 inches (101 to 107 cm). A good fit for most average builds. Vintage XL can measure similarly.
  • XL: Chest 42 to 44 inches (107 to 112 cm). Relaxed fit on most builds. Great for layering over a shirt.
  • XXL: Chest 44 to 46 inches (112 to 117 cm). Generous cut. Vintage pieces in this size are rarer and quite sought after.

For body length, a classic fit polo in a size Large typically measures around 29 to 30 inches (74 to 76 cm) from the back collar seam to the hem. Slim fit versions are usually 1 to 2 inches shorter. Vintage pieces from the 80s often measure 27 to 28 inches even in larger sizes, which is worth knowing if you prefer a longer hem.

How to Measure a Ralph Lauren Polo Correctly

When I list a polo on Revaleur, I always take three key measurements. If you are buying anywhere online, these are the ones to ask for or check.

Chest

Lay the shirt flat on a surface. Measure across the chest from armpit seam to armpit seam. Double that number. That is your chest measurement for that garment. Compare it to your actual chest measurement and leave a couple of centimetres for comfort.

Body Length

Measure from the top of the collar seam at the back down to the bottom of the hem. This tells you how long the shirt will sit on your body. Personal preference plays a big role here. Some guys want it tucked, others want it sitting just over the waistband.

Shoulder Width

Measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back. This one matters a lot. If the shoulders are too wide, the whole shirt looks wrong and nothing else compensates for it. If the shoulders fit, you can work around most other issues.

Getting these three numbers takes about two minutes and it will save you a lot of disappointment. I always recommend measuring one of your own well fitting polo shirts first, so you have a personal reference point.

Vintage Labels and What They Tell You

Ralph Lauren polo labels are a useful dating tool and they can also hint at sizing conventions. If you want to go deeper on this, I wrote a full piece on how to value a vintage Ralph Lauren polo which covers label evolution in detail. But here is a quick summary for sizing purposes.

Pre 1990s shirts tend to have a more compact cut. Labels from this era often say "Made in USA" and have a simpler graphic font. These shirts run small compared to the label. A Medium from this period can easily be a true modern Small.

1990s to early 2000s pieces are more generous in cut. "Made in Hong Kong", "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in Sri Lanka" labels appear. The chest tends to be roomier and the body slightly longer.

Anything from 2005 onwards follows a more standardised sizing that is closer to what you would expect from a contemporary retailer, though still not perfectly consistent.

And if you are ever unsure whether a vintage piece is genuine, it is worth reading my guide on how to spot fake vintage Ralph Lauren. Sizing inconsistencies are sometimes a red flag for replicas, though not always, which is why the label details matter so much.

A Few Things I Have Learned From Selling These Shirts

After handling hundreds of Ralph Lauren polos, a few things stand out.

  • If you are between sizes, go up rather than down in vintage Classic Fit pieces. They are easier to style slightly oversized than to wrestle into if they are too tight.
  • Cotton polo shirts can shrink, especially if they have been washed hot or tumble dried. A shirt that has shrunk even once will often measure smaller than you expect from the label alone.
  • The collar and placket can give away shrinkage too. If the collar looks a bit puckered or the placket pulls, the shirt has probably been washed poorly at some point.
  • A polo in great condition at €45 that fits perfectly is a far better buy than one at €25 that is a size too small. Fit is everything with polo shirts.

What Size Should You Actually Buy?

Here is my honest, simple advice. Measure yourself. Chest, and ideally shoulders too. Then compare those numbers to the actual garment measurements, not the label. Do not rely on the label size alone, ever. Especially not with vintage.

If you are buying from Revaleur, I always include measurements in the product listings. If something is unclear or you want to double check a fit before buying, just reach out. I would rather answer a question than have someone receive a shirt that does not work for them. That is not good for anyone.

Ralph Lauren polos are genuinely some of the best casual shirts ever made. The pique cotton, the collar construction, the weight of the fabric on a good vintage piece. It is quality that holds up for decades when cared for properly. Getting the size right means you will actually wear it, and that is the whole point.

If you are on the hunt for a well fitting vintage Ralph Lauren polo, have a browse through the Revaleur collection. Everything is measured, checked and honestly described. No surprises when it lands on your doorstep.
